Applying for UK Visa in USA
If I am a USA resident and want to apply for any xyz UK Visa then i need to follow the below mentioned Steps. Me & My Spouse has applied for a Visit visa of UK for 6 months for visiting our sister. (We have selected the Tourism option for desired documents)
1. First We need to Apply online on Official UK Embassy website in US http://visa4uk.fco.gov.uk
2. After filling online form and paying the Visa fees (separate fees for husband and wife) we have got option for an appointment for biometric test. There are numerous offices in USA that performs biometric test however at the end of application it provided us the nearest offices we can visit and leaves the option on us which office we select. (details on website http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/visafees)
3. After selecting the place where we will perform biometric test the website gave us the option to select the date from the calender and also informed us about the available time slots. We selected the date and time of our own choice.
4. We need to bring our appointment letter printout on USCIS Application support center. (Bring the payment receipt as well however they did not checked it for us)
5. The staff at USCIS office handled us politely and they took all of our 10 finger prints + photograph and Thats it. They had already stamped the appointment letter on reception and has not provided any other document.
6. Next step would be to provide all important documents mentioned on the website http://visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/. We have applied for UK visit Visa and forwarded all possible documents we could send that included the Below mentioned documents Including a cover letter mentioning that why and when we are intended to visit UK.
- Online filled applications (With Attached Photograph)
- Passport
- Valid DS 2019 (Formerly IAP66)
- Confirmed Flight Reservation (We Booked the flights & sent our itineraries)
- University Student confirmation letter (Here if you are doing Job then Job letter)
- Recent bank statement (Our statement + Our sister’s bank statement)
- Sponsor letter from our sister
- Receipt of biometric enrollment
- Payment confirmation receipt
7. We have sent the online application along with all documents to the office that fall in our region (New york office) as mentioned on website, we have checked through courier Tracking whether our documents has safely reached or not.
8. When the documents reached UK Embassy they sent us an E-mail mentioning that they have received our application and that the will require 5 business days to process Visa. If our documents are complete and there is no ambiguity in our case then they will process Visa in desired time. (In Our case Visa was issued in mentioned time. Documents were reached UK embassy on Monday Morning, they have started processing it and mailed us on Tuesday and on Thursday they have informed us through email that our Visa is processed and we will receive our documents after 1 business day)
9. We have received our documents within a Week. All we need to have is the genuine & complete documents, try to send as many supporting documents as you can as there is no way to contact the UK embassy for confirmation of processed application before 5 business days has passed.
10. After your application reached the UK embassy do not Try to contact them on any number before the processing date is over as normally they process the visa on time and even if you will contact them, they will ask you to wait and will not provide any date when your visa will be stamped. They also heavily charge their helplines. If there will be any ambiguity or missing document they will mail you within that time however the whole visa process will be delayed.
IF you are reading this and intended to apply for UK visa then
“BEST OF LUCK”

Your narration of UK visa application procedure is very helpful. I am planning to apply for one in near future, and it will really help me a lot.
Thanks

In new york, They have only all appointments after 1 month. Can you Imagine? For tourist visa someone has to wait so long. C’mon I am not applying for work visa or resident visa. I’ll better go for Schigen visa so atleast I can visit 25 EU nation with half of the visa fees.

Don’t tell me they are taking so long… is is the appointment for Biometric test? I was lucky to have date for Biometric Test within a week.

If the applicants are married, are they required to apply separately or on the same form?
Married couple need to Apply together, however forms are different for each person. Do not forget to mention on form that you are applying with your spouse. Send forms together and they will send a single package back with documents of both husband and wife. Best of Luck

Hi,
I wish the British embassy made our lives easier !
I’m from London, England and my girlfriend is in Texas, USA. SHe applied for a visit visa to the UK on the 18th of December and its the 5th of January today and she hasn’t recieved any kind of email from the embassy concerning anything. The office hasn’t even informed her if they have recieved the application and they ve started the application processing or not. SHe always used to get an email. We r quite sure they have recieved the documents, complete and securely as we tracked the documents after send them. I dont know what is going on. Atleast they should let us know by email or any other means that they ve started the application process or not. I’m really upset with the UK Embassy in USA. They have a very poor communication system. She was supposed to come on the 1st of Jan 09. Now her school would be starting in a week and she hasn’t heard from the Embassy so this means i wont get to see her even after a whole year

Thanks for the details, I spent some time on the visas4uk.gov.uk website but the fee structure was not there, which was to be found at ukvisas.gov.uk. I would recommend adding these links to the text above.

Hello,
I am supposed to start school in the UK in September. It is the end of May now, and on the website there are no interview dates available for
August inmost of all the US states I checked. Could this mean, it is too early to book for August or does it mean all August dates have been booked already?

i think its early to apply as the interview dates are available once decided. i think so. but if you have paid the fees then they should give u

I applied for a fiancee visa in the middle of April (the documents arrived at the British Consulate (LA) on the 20th – I tracked them).
I received an email 6 May informing me that they received my package, but (due to a heavy volume) have just opened it and started to process my visa. They stated in the email that the average time for that particular Consulate for settlement visas is 30-40 working days. We have now passed that time frame, and my wedding date is quickly approaching… (29 Aug) and I haven’t heard anything from them.
Don’t want to plan and pay for a whole wedding and then not be able to attend. Plus, I’d like to see my fiance! Since they have my passport, I’m unable to leave the country. (He’s using his time off work for the honeymoon, so he’s unable to come here)
We’re getting nervous. Any help or suggestions on what to do? What is taking them so long?
Does anyone know what they actually DO to process a fiancee visa? I know all the documents I had to submit, but what does the Consulate do with that information?

DESPERATELY SEEKING SOME INFORMATION
Has anyone got any details about how to ACTUALLY contact the British Consulate in New York (as original article states)?!?
When you call (212)-745-0200 (switchboard) you just get an automated response on all of the options, the visa one saying to contact Worldbridge (at a cost of $12). Contacted them and they said to contact the Consulate! A typical Bureaucrats heaven. Seems no-one can give an update on the status of an application.
My girlfriend is applying for a visitor visa after a disgusting fiasco in January this year where she was detained and sent back by Immigration at Heathrow. She had her tourist visa “black marked” in her passport, told she couldn’t use the visa waiver system ever again, all because of a simple and easily rectifiable misunderstanding.
She applied for this visa at the beginning of June (as their website was down!!!) and attended her biometric tests a week later. Overnighted her full documentation to New York (which took them 3 days to even acknowledge) and received an e-mail saying it was being processed and should be between 5-10 working days. Yeah, right.
However, every website/authority we have checked/contacted with seems to have different information on processing times and NOBODY can provide an update.
She even had a return flight booked as some proof of her leaving the UK after her visit. That flight has now had to be cancelled as after 3 weeks she has still heard NOTHING and she would have (and has) missed the flight.
Feel like she is being treated like a criminal in all honesty.
The communication and information from any authority, especially the British Consulate in NY, is so indescribably poor that I’m amazed anyone who does need a visa can ever get any service.
So, who can we contact. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks,
Disgusted with the appalling service of the British Government…as ever.

Hello Bobby – I did not tried for any number but if the date mentioned has passed then according to info you can call worldbridge and its cost is high
they have changed their internal processes that is why all UK visas are getting delayed.
My sis is UK resident and her visa renewal date has long passed and she can not have her passport back to visit us
about 2 years ago
Ansa -
We (Bobby and I) have called Worldbridge numerous times over the past year and I have nothing good to say about them. For a “visa info service” they don’t seem to provide any service what-so-ever but are ever so happy to take your $12 every time you call. They do offer a $3 per minute toll number and free email contact, but they’re just as unhelpful. I did exactly as the consulate message said and contacted Worldbridge when my application exceeded its time frame. They then told me they could not provide ANY information regarding visas after it had been submitted and that I needed to contact the consulate for any status updates. They also gave me a completely different processing time as the consulate! This system is a complete mess.

This post makes me feel a lot better about the manic process it takes to get a visa! I’m from NYC, but in Boston for the summer. I booked my appointment for next Friday for my biometrics in Boston. I’m now really worried if I mail my completed visa app to the NY office like my email states, that I won’t have everything back in time to leave for school around 1 September. On their site, they have a walk-in appointment method for PBS Tier 4 Student (which I am). Do you think I should go for this method, since it’s easy enough to get to NYC for me? Will this be ultimately quicker..or will there be a glitch since I’m having my biometrics taken in boston. Thanks!

I actually had the same question as BJ.. I was scheduled an appointment with the Consulate for Aug 4th and I need my visa by September 1st at the ABSOLUTE latest because I fly out on Sept 2nd. Should I stick with the appointment instead of sending everything out now?? I’m getting very nervous..

Which postal service you should use:
You can send your documents with any of the service however try to get the tracking / delivery confirmation. We have used USPS express delivery with delivery confirmation.
When tracking says your package is delivered and you have go no confirmation do not worry as it took almost a week for embassy to send us an email stating that “They have received our documents”

I applied for a Visitors visa to the UK and am from Africa but a permanent US resident.
My application actually went smooth. I had some questions at first about how to send my passport and the US Permanent resident card. I had done everything else (applied and paid online) so basically I was left with steps 7-10
I sent my
-printed application (even when completed online)
-2 passport photographs (45mm by 35mm)
-my original passport and green card
-2 months bank statement
-recent pay stubs
-letter from my employer stating the duration which i have worked there
-letter from my host in the UK addressed to consular that she is willing to let me stay with for the duration of visit
I sent these by Fedex to the UK embassy in NY and got an email two days that my stuff have been received and it will take 5-10 working days to process. A day later I received an email stating the visa has been issued and they are sending my passport and green card by UPS (and gave me the tracking number). I guess that was fast.

Hi,
I applied online and just got my biometrics taken yesterday for my VAR9 (points-based) visa. I can’t find any info on their website about sending the printed documents in, but I assume I need to send them to the LA address printed on my biometrics appt form. However, I remember seeing somewhere that I’m supposed to send stuff in within 2 weeks of having my biometrics taken. I just realized that I can’t do this because I’m traveling to Prague in a couple of weeks and will obviously need my passport! Do you know anything about this timeframe, and if there’s any way I can let them know that I can’t send anything in for a month?
Thanks for all this info!

I should first say “Thank you” to all people here for providing a better insight over the procedure for UK Visitors visa
My Visa process went smooth
Over all it took 4 working days to get the visa
1) On Tuesday I took the biometrics appointment and mailed all
the documentation to British Consulate General in Los Angeles
2) On Wednesday I got an acknowledgement email for the application. They mentioned if everything goes smooth it takes 5 working day to process my application
3) On the very next day Thursday I got an email that my visa has been approved with UPS tracking number mentioning that it would take 1 -2 business days for the tracking number to get activated in UPS website
4) On Monday I received the passport with UK visa
I would suggest to get the documentation work perfect to remove the delays
Thanks

Praneeth,
When was the earliest biometrics appointment available when you submitted your application online?
I’m waiting for one piece of information from my future employer before I submit my application online, and I’m worried that I won’t be able to book an appointment within the week.
Many thanks for your help!
Anne
@Anne – Actually it depends, when you submit the application it gives you the time slots which are available. If there are lots of people applying then the spot may not be available for immediate dates however sometimes they are available for within the week. The early you you will submit the application the early appointment you will get for biometrics test. Thanks

Why do they require all docs to be sent to uk consulate two weeks after biometrics are taken? does anyone know if the’re strict about it? i worry as I’m applying for a uk tourist visa and shengen visa, and im pressed for time (Im leaving in about 4 weeks). my passport is now with the italian consulate and right after i receive my stamped passport, i’ll need to mail all my docs to uk consulate in LA straight away (my biometrics will be 3 weeks old by then).
My questions:
1) what can i do if my biometrics is more than 2 weeks old? can i just have it re-stamped? (i cant set an appointment w/o my passport w/me!) or is the UK consul that strict about it at all?
2) can I have a representative go on my behalf in person to the UK consul in LA to apply for my UK visa? can he expect to get the visa on the same day? (i heard applying in person was the best approach a couple years back).
Any answers will be greatly appreciated. I have not gotten any responses at all from UKvisa center numbers, emails, etc. Thanks in advance.

I have applied for Shengan and UK visa at once and i was having the same situation you have got, I had got my visa within 5 business days as I have mentioned in my post so we were fine however now a days everyone is complaining that UK visa is delayed somehow.
Answer
1) I think it should not be an issue, as you have cleared your biometrics
2) There was no option previously but I think they have started it recently but it is only available for tier 4 students . Copying the text

hey thanks, admin. im due to get my passport back on monday, and i found out from the biometrics place that i can go back as soon as i get my passport to get my biometrics redone without an appointment. straight after that, i plan to send all my docs by mail with premium service for an extra $150. (Premium service will expedite their processing of your UK visa — at least that’s what their website says). I’m keeping my fingers crossed this will all come together nicely. Gotta keep some optimism!!

Just wanted to share the reply from Wordbridge Service that i got regarding my question – whatif you’re not able to mail application within 2 weeks of your Biomterics Appointment:
“Please be advised that all applicants have 14 days after their biometrics appointment to submit their documents to the consulate before the application becomes invalid. If you cannot submit your documents before the 15th day then it will then be necessary to submit and pay for a new application and attend another biometrics appointment.
Please note that you will not be able to respond to this email. If you have additional questions submit a new enquiry via email by visiting the WorldBridge website at https://www.visainfoservices.com/Pages/SendAnEmail.aspx?c=us or call the WorldBridge Service at 1-212-796-5773 or 1-900-656-5000, trained live service agents will help you with your visa application questions.”
Hope this helps someone.

I’m having a terrible time trying to figure this all out! I applied for a visa online (as required) and went for my biometrics appointment (in Massachusetts), but I can’t find anywhere information about submitting the supporting documents. Am I supposed to mail everything?!?! There’s no way I want to mail my passport and other original copies of important documents!!! Help!

A contact of mine at my school in the UK just helped me find this link: https://www.visainfoservices.com/Pages/Content.aspx?Tag=HowDoIApply_PAGE It lists every step of the process and where to send supporting documents and other information. Very helpful! Why they make it so difficult to find the basic information, I don’t know. But there it is.

Hi,
I am not sure if this link is still working. I applied for a UK visitors visa recently. Sent my documents on Nov 18, and after receiving a acknowledgement of receipt of my documents on Nov 27 I have heard nothing about my application. I was supposed to fly out on Dec 3 but postponed my trip to Dec 10.
Are other people experiencing huge delays with their Visas? Please share.
Thanks.

Hello everyone,
Hope this is still active. When you guys sent in your documents, can you get the originals back? Or do they take / confiscate everything and just give you back your passport with the visa???
I am very nervous about the fact that I won’t be able to get any original documents back!!!!
Thanks!
