Comparison / Difference between Canon Rebel XSI 450D VS Nikon D40

I have bought both cameras and used them for couple of the days, I was confused on which one to buy. Everything on both cameras seems to be similar, the only big difference between these two cameras was the Megapixels. I still ended up with Nikon D40 due to its user friendly interface and very easy to handle menus. Canon was difficult to use, its settings were little hard to set. However now after printing picture from Nikon D40 I feel the need of more megapixels because I cannot crop the picture, and can not print it more than 8 x 10. For normal user its ok but even for a semi pro its not enough. I would have LOVED the Nikon D40 even if it was with 8MP. The detailed comparison is given below along with the picture comparison.

Conclusion:

  1. Both cameras feel same on hand, almost same weight and dimensions, Nikon D40 grip is better than Canon Rebel XSI 450D as canon camera is bit slippery in hand.
  2. The Megapixels, yes it matters when the difference is huge like this, a 2MP difference could have been considered the same but 6Mp is not enough.
  3. Canon Rebel XSI has better minimum ISO that is 100, lesser the ISO higher the picture quality will be in same settings so ISO range is better in Canon even if the Nikon is offering higher ISO 3200.
  4. Exposure compensation in Nikon D40 gives you more option to select however you might never need to select the exposure value between -1 to +1 so it is not that impotant.
  5. Canon LCD is bigger however 2.5" LCD is also good and having same LCD pixels made the Nikon LCD better quality view.
  6. Sensor type is different however experts compare both sensors as same with very minor difference.
  7. Nikon D40 sensor is bigger, the bigger is the better however the pixel density of Canon is better that make the quality of images for both cameras the same.
  8. Shooting speed of Canon Rebel XSI is better.
  9. Nikon D40 has very user friendly interface that guides you on screen and make it really easy for you to change and explore its settings, Canon is bit difficult to get use to it, interface is difficult and you need time to get use to it.
  10. Canon XSI 450D indeed is better camera if we compare them over all, specially due to the Megapixels it have because picture quality is same and Nikon D40 is more user friendly.
