Conclusion:
- Very few similarities and many differences but differences are not that much, very close competition indeed lets discuss the positive of both cameras.
- Canon has few more megapixels and a little bigger sensor and better pixel density, better lower ISO, that makes its pictures slightly better in quality than the Sony Cybershot DSC-WX1. Canon camera is lighter in weight however in dimensions both cameras are similar
- Sony Cybershot DSC-W1 has 1 point better optical zoom, better lower aperture range and better maximum shutter speed. Sony WX1 also shoot pictures faster than the canon camera, means Sony can take 10 pictures in 1 second and canon can take less than one picture in 1 second, Sony camera has better flash as well.
- Now, it totally depends which camera suits you most but my recommendation is to get Sony Cybershot DSC-WX1 due to its fast shooting speed, just imagine pressing the button and one seconds 10 pictures in full resolution are saved in you memory card? wonderful + with better lower aperture Sony WX1 will able to focus close object clearly and sharply means better portraits so the difference between the quality of images will be minimal. Sony WX1 might be little heavier however its features with better zoom and flash range make it must buy, however you need to spend some extra money to have these options.
- If you want to save money then Canon Digital IXUS 120 IS is not a bad option at all, because as you can see, apart from the fast shooting of Sony camera, almost all other features have little difference so there is no harm buying this camera as well.

Thank you very much this has been really helpful. Sony just announced it is releasing a new range of camera about 5 in the W series, 1 in the T and 1 in the H. Just to add to the mix, although I fear they will be out of my price range but the Hx5 specs look really good. Should I wait?

Do you also think the Sony WX1 is better than the IXUS 110 and 200. For me touch screen is not important but the capability of the camera. Are there any good compacts which allow you some manual control but the same quality as Sony and Canon?
