With a price difference of almost $30 Canon A2000IS is the camera with more advanced and polished features among which the most important feature is the Optical zoom that is 6x in Canon A2000IS digital camera, in most of the canon digital cameras the optical zoom is not more than 4x so Canon A2000 has a little edge in this regard.
Furthermore the LCD and LCD quality is better than the Canon A1000IS. Over all Canon A1000IS camera is also not a bad choice as its a canon camera, always the best brand in the range of digital cameras still if we compare both, in all aspects the canon A2000IS wins the race.

I don’t have either one but, from the pictures it looks like the A1000 had an optical viewfinder and the A2000 doesn’t.

Yeah Roy – You are really a keen observer. The Optical view finder is not present for A2000. Optical view finder is not very important however when battery is running low then one can chose to use the optical view finder?

Optical View finder is also a HUGE life saver when you have lots of sun behind you (hitting the LCD screen).

The A1000 zoom is the 35mm equiv. of 140mm at the telephoto end, which is lots of reach for most people.
What this comparison did not seem to focus on, is that the A1000 has a wider apature which give beter low-light performance, and the ability to take shallow DOF shots.
Also, a view finder is actually a lot more handy than one might think.
