Conclusion:

  1. If we compare the technical features of both cameras the D3000 sounds better but hand on experience prove Nikon D40 a better camera. Lets discuss how.
  2. Nikon D3000 has more accurate meter as Nikon D40 meter sometimes overexpose the photos
  3. ISO speed 100 seems very attractive as Nikon D40 has lowest ISO speed 200 however the result for both are same noisy pictures. It means Nikon D3000 one stop more nosier than the D40 so ISO is same in both if we see the results. The D40 pictures taken on ISO 1600 are less grainy than the pictures of D3000 with same ISO.
  4. The D40 has better shutter sync speed that is professional 1/500 as compare to Nikon D3000 that has 1/200 sync speed
  5. D40 is smaller and lighter but not much difference.
  6. Nikon D3000 has slower operation than Nikon D40 however it shoots faster than Nikon D40
  7. Browsing images in D3000 is slower than the Nikon D40
  8. For beginners the Nikon D40 is better value, the only reason that might bothers you is the megapixels however it does not bother me allot as the over all quality on Nikon D40 images is better than D3000 Digital SLR camera.
